Land freight transport. Delivery by road or rail
Land freight transport. Delivery by road or rail - which one to choose
The movement of goods is a key element in the economy of any country. There are several types of transport for the transport of goods: road - transport of goods by truck, rail by train, air transport of goods by aircraft - air cargo and sea by ship. Road and rail transport are the two types used to transport goods by land and across continents.
So what are the main differences between trucking and rail freight?
Road transport is the most commonly used type of freight transport for the movement of goods. Many products related to our daily lives such as household goods, food, fruits, vegetables, flowers and more. are transported in all countries and between continents by road freight. Also, the delivery of many different retail loads and other forms to different distribution centers is realized by road transport.
Rail transport is also a very common mode of transport, especially in countries and continents with long transit times, such as the United States, China, Russia, and parts of Europe. Freight trains are able to carry goods of different types and volumes, such as grain, coal, minerals and metals, farm animals and others. As with road freight transport, there are several types of rail freight: single wagons - the customer wants to transport several wagons and the train consists of wagons of different customers, full train freight - the customer has enough freight to fill the train and intermodal or combined rail transport, in which containers or trailers are loaded on wagons.
Road freight transport or rail freight transport - pros and cons
In road transport, the load can be delivered quickly on a pre-set schedule, but restrictions such as the size and weight of the load can be an obstacle on the road in different countries. It is economical and cost-effective for short distances, but may not be as cost-effective as longer distances.
Road freight transport is used for long, short, long-distance and long-distance distances, but it is certainly slower than long-distance rail transport. In the case of road haulage, a vehicle can provide door-to-door delivery, but this can be hampered by weather and road conditions.
Road freight transport offers an easier option to track the movement of freight, but is not as environmentally friendly as rail transport.
There is no doubt that rail freight is a relatively greener option for transport, as trains burn less fuel per tonne-mile than road vehicles, but from a financial point of view, rail transport has additional costs for moving a container from the rail. line to the final destination, which is done mostly by road freight.
Freight trains carry more freight than trucks, but possible delays in cross-border movement due to changes in train operators are very common. Long-distance transport of goods, especially larger ones, is relatively cheaper and faster by rail, but it is not economically viable for shorter distances, although freight trains are charged for each kilometer of rail used. infrastructure, which is not always the case with road transport.
Despite these pros and cons, road and rail transport can be perfectly combined to offer the customer trouble-free delivery at a good price, including a door-to-door option.
