We will try to briefly explain freight forwarding processes for each mode of freight transport.
In this material, we will pay attention to international freight transport, because with domestic freight transport things are easier, simpler - there are no some essential procedures and documents that are in international transport.
In road freight transport, the sender begins the process by submitting a Request for Transport for the cargo to the forwarder. After the request is accepted by the freight forwarder, he begins the planning and distribution or - the freight forwarder and the shipper work together to plan the movement of the cargo based on the date the cargo is ready for shipment and the requirements, for example, for quantity or specificity. Next comes the packing of the cargo - the goods are carefully packed depending on their type and volume and whether the cargo is LTL or FCL. The packing is generally done by the shipper under the guidance or not of the freight forwarder or as an additional freight forwarding service, but in any case the ultimate goal is for the cargo packaging to ensure its safety during transport.
The next step is loading and transportation - the freight forwarder takes on his duties in international road freight transport, preparing and/or monitoring and checking all the documentation.
Now comes the stage of crossing international borders. The essential thing here is that thorough documentation and customs documents must be prepared well in advance and checked before the arrival of the goods, and the freight forwarder must be truly competent.
Delivery is naturally the last stage, upon reaching the final destination, the goods are unloaded, checked for quality and quantity by the recipient, completing the process of international road freight transport.
In rail freight transport, the principle of operation is generally the same, except that the forwarder must organize transport of the cargo to and from the station and submit his request to the station. Or… Acceptance of the shipment - the sender submits a Request, the forwarder accepts it and submits his to the station. The forwarder and the sender coordinate the movement of the cargo based on the destination and quantity. The goods are packed. Acceptance by the carrier follows - the station accepts the cargo and stamps the waybill. The forwarder assumes its part of the obligations under the documents and upon reaching the final station organizes and implements the transport to the recipient, unless otherwise agreed, and hands it over.
We will briefly mention, in order not to repeat ourselves too much, what the forwarding process is in air and sea freight transport, and we will only note the most important things.
In air freight transport (air cargo) - the sender requests an offer and sends his request, the forwarder accepts it, the cargo is packed, the forwarder arranges the transport to the airport. The essential thing here is that the goods go through export customs clearance and are placed in transit. Finally - the cargo is transported from the airport to the recipient's location, and from there to him himself, if so agreed.
We skip the offer, the request and the preparation of the cargo for transport in sea freight transport and the process remains as follows. The goods are moved from the sender to the forwarder's warehouse. Customs clearance follows - the documents are handed over to the relevant authorities for inspection. If everything is correct, it is time for the inspection, loading of the cargo and its movement to the forwarder's warehouse or another one reserved. During this time, the forwarder has already negotiated and reserved a shipping line from port to port. It is important that your sea freight quote includes all costs such as additional currency correction fees and exchange rate fees. Yes, sometimes there is something incidental, but overall the final picture is the same. In sea freight, import and customs clearance can begin before the cargo arrives. It is managed by a customs broker. When the cargo arrives at its destination, it is unloaded and transported from the port to its final destination – the recipient.

The forwarder prepares the necessary documentation regarding his commitment and checks the other available. He chooses the most suitable route based on the requirements of his client, such as delivery time, price and specific needs of the goods. He organizes loading, transportation, unloading, warehousing, all the while monitoring the location and condition of the cargo. And finally, the cargo is with the recipient, who confirms the delivery and pays, if the terms of the service do not stipulate prepayment or otherwise.
